Dolpo is an isolated region lying North West of Dhaulagiri on the largely rain-shadow area bordering Tibet. This region is renowned for its pristine beauty and rugged charm. Guarded the secluded area by mountain crests sliced by deep and narrow gorges, the way of life of this region reflects truly a Tibetan culture.

Being a restricted area in Nepal, the region was only opened to trekkers in 1990 with a special trekking permit.
Here one can still encounter nomadic people, their bon religion, culture and experience their primitive life- style, which remains almost untouched and unexplored. This region offers an endless variety of landscapes, cultures, and great people. The unbounded diversity makes it a destination you can visit over and over again. It even becomes more interesting and fascinating with every time you return. The landscape resembles that of the Tibetan Plateau instead of the lush, green hills which you find elsewhere in Nepal at comparative altitudes, the terrain is barren, rocky, and arid. Here, the people are very pleasant. By nature, they belong to Tibetan origin and follow the pre-Buddhist Bon religion. Their language is closely related to Tibetan. The elevation of the trails in the Dolpo region starts from 1650 m to 5160 m above sea level. This is the region where some of Nepal’s most remarkable flora and fauna are found. Dolpo Phoksundo Trek and Dolpo Shey Gompa Trek are very popular in the region.
